Pearly King & Queen
Mother of Pearl or Nacre is a composite material produced by some molluscs and makes up the outer coating of pearls. While a natural material, the precise formation of nacre is not fully understood. This popular decorative element can be found in architecture, musical instruments, fashion and of course pranga ankers.
The name, Pearly King and Queen derives its origins from Henry Croft, an orphan street sweeper who collected money for charity. He created a suit decorated with mother-of-pearl buttons to draw attention to himself and his fund-raising efforts. Various Pearly Kings and Queens Societies have existed in the UK since 1902.
